Combination Skin? Really?

If you've ever been told that you have 'combination skin', it stands a chance that this could have been caused by irregularities in your skin care regimen.

Many of the extreme differences found can simply be down to to over cleansing or under moisturising in a particular area.

The first step is to first identify if you are actually doing this and if so, make some changes to your approach. For instance, you could apply a little less attention to moisturising the t zone (or areas that are more prone to oiliness) and apply a little more focus to moisturising the drier areas. We know this sounds obvious, but old habits tend to die hard.

You can then test products for 'normal' skin types, it's best to do this for about 30 days to give your skin some time to adjust. On completion of your revised regimen, we'd recommend a visit to a qualified therapist for a thorough review of your skin.

If in the past you have been using 2 different products for your skin (because you thought it was combination), you could end up using just one. That is, if you find the experiment a success. Chances are, you'll probably end up saving some money.

What's All This Beauty Stuff About Anyway?

Lets face it, with many peoples finances stretched to the limit, savvy skin care buyers aren't going to use products that don't deliver the goods. Many cosmetic companies are now leveraging the credibility that scientific research gives them.

Whilst the research is impressive, the achievements of some products have to be diluted as to avoid making medical claims.  The net result is that most skin care products actually achieve far more that say they do.

We have evolution to thank for our addiction to beauty products, this is because healthy skin is a way of demonstrating our attractiveness and suitability for a mate. There's also new research suggesting that humans may subconsciously pick up on messages in appearance. Messages that assume a state of health in any potential candidate.

A recent discovery suggested that booking yourself in for a make-over can have a healthy impact on your state of mind too.  Subjects who underwent a make-over treatment saw improvements in posture.  It seems that silver surfers can benefit too. The research showed that older people tripped and fell far less following a treatment.

Looks to us like there's never been a better excuse to go out and treat yourself...

Don’t let a skin reaction ruin your cool

Allergic reactions to skin care products are best avoided. The ‘freshly slapped backside look’ will usually occur just before an important date or meeting, leaving you feeling frustrated and embarrassed.

Whilst you can't tell whether your skin will throw a wobbly or not, a little forward thinking could well save the day.

One strategy is to apply the product well before you venture out into society. Gently rubbing your new 'potion' onto some inconspicuous area like the elbow, you'll see if any eruptions are likely. Usually they'll take place within a couple of days and will manifest themselves in a variety of different ways. If you must put something on your face, try somewhere that your hair can hide if the worst happens.

Reacting to skin care products is quite common. Rather than letting your face become a proving ground for all and sundry, we'd suggest that you visit a professional skin care therapist (preferably a Dermalogica one:)). Having conducted a thorough examination of the skin, you can be sure that any products recommended will be suitable your individual skin type.
