Frizzy Hair? Beat It By Reading This

Dry, frizzy hair can be a nightmare to deal with but it needn’t be.  Knowing the cause though is the first step in knowing how to find a solution to the problem.  Isn’t that always the way?!

Some of the causes of frizzy hair are overuse of heated styling equipment, such as hairdryers, chemical damage, chlorine damage and the use of the wrong types of hair styling products.

If you have naturally curly hair then chances are that it will also be frizzy.  An ideal haircare product to use on naturally curly hair is a pomade.  Pomades have some oil in them and give a low level of hold.  The best way to use one is immediately after washing hair.  Put a little pomade in your hand, add a few drops of water to make it easy to spread and lightly finger it through your hair.  Make sure not to get it near the scalp though otherwise this will make your hair look greasy, which would be another problem altogether!  Let it dry and then you can either leave it or comb it through your hair.  If you find that a pomade is too heavy then a gel that’s been specifically formulated for frizzy hair is a good option.  In general though, gels and mousses are hair products that are best avoided for frizzy hair because they tend to have a high alcohol content which can make frizziness much worse!

Hair that is naturally coarse (and coarse hair is different to thick hair) tends to be dry and frizzy.  Using a curling iron is a good way to deal with this kind of hair.  Straightening hair with a curling iron makes it shiny and smooth, but overuse of heated hair equipment can have the opposite effect and damage hair in the long run.  Always make sure to use a suitable hair styling product before using any heated hair equipment.  Davines MOMO Anti-Frizz Protective Fluid moisturises, smooths, protects and facilitates in the shaping of hair.  It also helps eliminate frizziness and counteracts the destabilizing effects of humidity on the hair.

Bleaching, colouring and perming hair can result in it looking frizzy because the chemicals used in these treatments can be very damaging to hair.  Regular use of a deep conditioning treatment can work wonders on this kind of hair as it will help to replenish lost moisture and nourish your hair, as well as keeping it resilient and shiny.  Deep conditioners can be used with heat or without and are simple to use.  If heat isn’t used then just apply the conditioner according to the instructions, then pop a plastic cap over your hair, or wrap your hair securely in a towel, and allow the conditioner to work its magic for the recommend time period.   For even deeper conditioning, sit under a hood or bonnet dryer to allow the treatment to fully penetrate the hair.  You will get the best results by using a deep conditioning treatment once a week.

When choosing a conditioner always bear in mind the thickness of your hair.  If your hair is thin and you choose a conditioner that’s too heavy and rich, it may get rid of the frizzies but it will also weigh your hair down and make it look flat and lifeless.  Using a conditioner for colour treated hair will mean your hair gets the extra moisture it needs without being weighed down.  If your hair is thick then you need to look for a smoothing conditioner.   This type of conditioner will give your hair lots of moisture and a thin layer on top of your hair which will help to weigh it down slightly, and it will make your hair  soft and smooth.  Leave-in conditioners are another option and these can work on different types and thicknesses of hair.  However, if the idea of leaving a conditioner on your hair is a bit off-putting then stick to using one that can be rinsed out!

A hair mask is a step up from a deep conditioning treatment and will provide the most intensive conditioning that you can find.  You can either use a store or salon bought mask or you can make your own quickly and easily!   A very effective, nourishing and simple hair mask you can make at home is this one:-

Blend 1 avocado, 1 egg yolk and 1 banana together.  Drizzle in some extra virgin olive oil until you reach a good consistency (i.e. not too runny and not too thick!) and until there’s enough of the blend for the amount of hair you have.  Work the mixture well into your hair, leave it on for at least 20 minutes, then rinse out using cool water.  Using a hair mask like this once a week will give your hair the boost it needs to keep it looking smooth and shiny instead of frizzy & frazzled!

Humidity can (as many women know all too well!) play havoc with frizzy hair.  One simple way to prevent this from happening is to rinse your hair with as cool water as you can stand after you’ve shampooed and conditioned.  This will smooth the hair cuticle and make hair smoother and less frizzy.

Another simple trick to avoid frizziness is to blow dry hair very methodically.  This may take a bit of time but you’ll find that it’s well worth it.   Divide your hair into sections using curler pins. Using a big round brush, blow dry your hair, one section at a time, in a downward motion.  This will prevent the cuticle from frizzing and splitting, which is something that can happen when hair is blow dried using an up and down motion along the hair.  Use as low a temperature setting as possible as blow drying on too high a setting scorches hair and causes substantial damage.

So, knowing what is causing your frizzy hair, how to tackle it and which haircare products and methods to use will have your hair looking sleek, silky and shiny in next to no time!
