Three Tips For Tired Skin

Who hasn’t tried to get through the day having had far too little sleep the night before?  To help yourself to face the day ahead when you've not had enough sleep, there are quick ways to revive and invigorate yourself and to appear less exhaused!  Try these tips and you’ll feel perkier and look good:-

Splash cold water on your face!  Coolness constricts blood vessels, meaning the skin benefits from a smoother, more toned look.  Do this after washing your face in the morning and not only will your face feel refreshed and toned but it will also perk you up!  If you’re out and about, carry an atomizer filled with water with you which you can use to spritz your face throughout the day.

Moisturise your skin using a rich, occlusive moisturiser.  This will lock hydration into your skin. With a good moisturiser your skin will be softer, more supple and any wrinkles will appear less obvious.

If your skin is still looking a bit lifeless, pour some milk into a bowl and add a few ice cubes.  Dip a face flannel into the mixture and wring it out well.  Put the flannel over your face for a few minutes and then rinse. The PH of the milk together with the coldness makes for a calming and brightening of the skin.  It’s probably not a good idea to drink the milk afterwards though!!

A Great Shave No Matter Where

In recent years the removal of excess body hair, and even normal levels of body hair, has grown in popularity and this includes in our most private body areas!  Shaving the pubic area can be a daunting and challenging experience to a beginner.  Aside from the possible pain from nicks and scratches caused by shaving, the after effects may not be as pleasant or attractive as hoped for either!  A painful, irritating rash may develop after shaving and, unless it’s properly treated, it may be annoyingly persistent and a source of discomfort and irritation.  The good news is that treating this kind of rash is actually not difficult if you understand what the cause of it is and what can be done to prevent and cure it.

This type of rash is like any other shaving rash in that hair follicles curve back into the skin instead of growing back out after shaving.   This causes inflammation, bumps and a rash over the pubic area which is uncomfortable and annoying.   It can develop after just one shave and further shaving only exacerbates the condition because the already inflamed and irritated skin is potentially further nicked and cut by the razor blade.  People who are prone to shaving rashes on other areas of their body and people with naturally curly hair are most likely to suffer from this type of shaving rash.

Since ingrown hairs are the cause of the problem, one way to resolve the situation is to stop shaving the affected area which will allow the hairs to grow back out and the skin to calm down.  Any hairs that have become lodged under the skin and which cannot grow out on their own can then be gently removed using tweezers.  This will help reduce bumpiness and irritation.  The rash and inflammation should then soon disappear and things will get back to normal!  However, if you do want to continue shaving because you prefer to be smooth and hair free then a further rash can be avoided by taking extra care when shaving this delicate area.

To start with, use a shaving cream which is especially formulated and extra gentle for use on this area.  This will lubricate the hair follicles and make it easier for the razor to glide over the skin without pulling at the hairs.  Don’t pull the skin whilst shaving and always make sure to shave in the direction the hair is growing.  After shaving, pat dry and then apply a gentle moisturizing lotion to keep the skin soft and smooth and to prevent hairs from becoming ingrown.

To help maintain healthy skin between shaves, the use of a gentle, non-irritating, exfoliant can be very beneficial as it will help to reduce bumpy skin, which is a contributing cause to ongoing shaving rash.

Happy shaving!!

Debunking The Myth of Those 8 Glasses of Water a Day

For years we have been bombarded with advice about the health benefits of drinking 8 glasses of water per day.  Supposedly, this keeps our skin moist and supple and is good for our insides as well.  However, keeping skin in great condition isn’t that simple!

True, it is necessary to keep your body, as well as your skin, hydrated but the outermost layer of skin doesn’t absorb water.  The reason for this is that it consists of dead skin cells.  Internal factors don’t determine the moisture level of our skin but external factors, such as dry heat, hot or cold air, etc, and the number of oil producing glands you have DO determine the skin’s moisture level.

For healthy, hydrated skin exfoliate regularly with a gentle exfoliator, such as Dermalogica’s Gentle Cream Exfoliant, which will remove dead skin cells.  This will prepare the skin for the application of a rich moisturizer which should be applied whilst skin is still damp as this will enhance the absorption of the moisturizer into your skin.

So, drinking lots of water is great for your insides but maintaining a good skincare regime will help to keep your skin in great condition!

Tackle Monthly Breakouts and Win!

Most women have at some point experienced annoying monthly breakouts which can be embarrassing and make us feel self-conscious.  Spots appear when hormones trigger excessive oil production, which leads to a blockage along with bacteria and dead skin cells. It makes sense therefore that you’re a lot more likely to experience spots around the time of your period.

You can't control your hormones with skincare products but what you can do is put up a good fight by reducing oiliness with a gentle, water-soluble cleanser, such as Dermalogica Clearing Skin Wash which is free of artificial fragrance and colour and contains naturally healing and soothing ingredients such as Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, Arnica and Milk Thistle.  The Clearing Skin Wash has to be recommended by your professional therapist, so a visit to the salon is mandatory.

You should also exfoliate skin regularly using a gentle, non-abrasive exfoliator.  Using one that is too harsh will only aggravate your skin further which is the last thing you want!

Adopting a good skincare regime will go a long way to keeping skin looking healthy, fresh and clear and tackling the dreaded monthly breakouts.

7 Simple Steps to Sexy Summer Feet

Are you nervous about revealing your feet to the world after they’ve been tucked away out of sight in boots and heavy shoes over the winter period? Don’t worry! Getting feet in tip-top condition for revealing in sandals and flip-flops during the summer, and beyond, is simple.  Just take these easy steps and your feet will be soft and sexy before you know it.
  1. Soak your feet in warm water for 10-15 minutes and wash them using a regular soap, shower gel or a foot wash.  Pat dry.
  2. Use a pumice stone to buff away stubbornly rough, hard skin on the soles of your feet and around the heels.
  3. Get those nail clippers out!  Cut your toe nails straight across.  Don’t cut them in a curved way as this can lead to nails becoming ingrown.
  4. Massage a deeply moisturizing lotion or cream into your feet.  It’s important to use a lotion or cream that’s specifically formulated for feet, or rough, dry skin, as lighter weight body moisturisers are ineffective in dealing with hard skin on soles and heels and, in fact, can cause more hard skin to build up instead of getting rid of it!  A great product to use is Dermalogica Ultrarich Body Cream, a unique liquefying formula which deeply moisturizes extra dry skin so it’s perfect for use on elbows, knees and heels.  Not only that but it’s antioxidant rich, healing and non-greasy so you won’t be slipping around in those flip-flops!
  5. Massage cuticle oil into your cuticles and then very gently push them back.
  6. Use a nail buffer to smooth nails.
  7. Last but not least, apply your favourite nail polish.  Of course, this is optional and men may not want to follow this step ...or there again, some more liberated men may want to!!
Hey presto!  Sexy, smooth feet in next to no time.

Ten Free Shaves

Ten Free Shaves? Male Skin Care Promo

If you've been guilty of stealing your wife or girlfriends skin care products, now could be the right time to differentiate and go and invest in some of your own.

Why? Well, differences exist between both skin types, and the products required to maintain balance. Apart from the obvious capacity to generate hair, a man's skin is some 25% thicker than a woman's. There are also differences in collagen density.

Superficially, there's more. The texture is rougher and there are differences in sebum composition and production. Following puberty men produce more sebum and this is usually the reason for acne hanging around for longer.

The aforementioned hair production is also part of puberty and the apearance of facial hair means an increase in sweat secretions. Men actually sweat twice as much as women and the consistency of this differs because of a lower ph value.

Because shaving forces exfoliation of the skin, regular activity with a razor actually induces accelerated cell turnover and exposes underdeveloped cells. This action could quite possibly contribute to the problems many men face with their skin.

I'm sure that many can remember the initial rash, irritation and redness associated with shaving. In some cases the skin adapts quite quickly, but for some the fight against razor burn and ingrown hairs can last a lifetime if left unchecked.

Fortunately there are many shave products and techniques available today that can help with calming down red, tight, post shaved skin.

If you've considered using a shave cream or oil, jump over to our other shaving resource on hubpages. Alternatively, take a look at our shaving products by skin type page.

Fancy a freebie? Post on the dailygrooming facebook wall with your shaving concern and we'll send you some free shaving and skincare samples.

We're really confident that the samples we send you will possibly give the best shaving experience you've ever had. Although charitable, we are unfortunately not a charity, so we'll be limiting samples to the first 10 posts:)

Combination Skin? Really?

If you've ever been told that you have 'combination skin', it stands a chance that this could have been caused by irregularities in your skin care regimen.

Many of the extreme differences found can simply be down to to over cleansing or under moisturising in a particular area.

The first step is to first identify if you are actually doing this and if so, make some changes to your approach. For instance, you could apply a little less attention to moisturising the t zone (or areas that are more prone to oiliness) and apply a little more focus to moisturising the drier areas. We know this sounds obvious, but old habits tend to die hard.

You can then test products for 'normal' skin types, it's best to do this for about 30 days to give your skin some time to adjust. On completion of your revised regimen, we'd recommend a visit to a qualified therapist for a thorough review of your skin.

If in the past you have been using 2 different products for your skin (because you thought it was combination), you could end up using just one. That is, if you find the experiment a success. Chances are, you'll probably end up saving some money.

Summer Skin Basics - Quick Tips

If you want to make the most of your looks when spending time in the sun this year, you'd be wise to do a little planning ahead. Looking red and dried out could spoil even the most expensive looking outfit.

All you need to do is make sure that you have a few essentials hiding out in your handbag. Sunscreen for instance is a must, as is some kind of cover up for the hair. If you treat the sun with respect, you'll soon start to get some natural colour and this will reduce the need for the usual amount of make-up products. A little powder should do the job nicely. Follow this up with some lip gloss, a little mascara and the result will be tasteful and polished. Remember if you are on holiday, its best to to this before opening that bottle of wine as you'll need a steady hand!

Oils and balms are great for use in the evening, adding radiance and glow to your skin.

There's Nothing Sweet About An Aging Complexion

If you're the kind of person that believes a ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, you may have wondered what steps can be taken to keep skin aging at bay. One clever tip is to reduce your sugar intake.

Sugar consumption over time can lead to a process called glycation, this occurs when a protein molecule becomes damaged by a glucose molecule becoming attached to it. From this, new molecules are formed and commonly known as an Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs for short).

What can you expect from fully developed AGEs then? The answer is damage to ligament, cartilage and a general loss in elasticity within the skin. Wrinkles follow, and you can inevitably enjoy more sagging than a hot wax candle.

The remedy is of course to reduce your sugar intake, but if you try to do this at once you may find it difficult to achieve. We suggest making it easier on yourself by taking a series of small steps over time, the easiest being reducing the amount of sugar in tea and coffee (it all adds up) drunk throughout the day.

If you are busy at work and are reliant on vending machines, one idea is to avoid the vending machine sugar and take your own (preferably in sachets for convenience), slowly reducing your consumption a bit at a time.

In no time at all you could have significantly reduced your sugar intake, meaning you can be safe in the knowledge that you have taken yet another step toward slowing the aging process of your skin.

If you'd like to know more about skin aging, pop over to the Dailygrooming site and check out our Dermalogica Products for Prematurely Aging Skin page.
